A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 29 - A Mixed Bag

It's time again for another Roddus sampler with this collection of great tracks that have really impressed me over the last couple of months of wading through my hard drive of music. This collection has a strong Jazz flavour with excellent stuff from the likes of South Africa's brilliant Themba, the jazz rock of Spirit's "Elijah", some great Soft Machine and my favorite track off my album of the month by Toshiko Akiyoshi. We also have some brilliant lost 60/70s rare artifacts that I discovered on the excellent mysteryposter Blog, especially the totally cool Krimson Kake with this song off their only single. I have included one of my favorite Captain Beefheart songs as a tribute after his passing in December.Ticket is a legendary acid rock band from here in New Zealand and I have included the awesome first track of their recently reissued first album which I managed to pick up before they sold out. Mention must also be made to the incendiary "Pain..." by the pre White Stripes Upholsters, Jack White at his glorious best. Finally I will point out the inclusion of the Bob Dylan Masterpiece "Blind Willie McTell" which comes from the "Bootleg series Vol 3" of which I got the whole 9 volumes for my Birthday last month. Thanks Dear Mrs Roddus you spoil me. Any way wade into this sampler and discover some other great gems I haven't mentioned.

A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 28 - Punk!!!!

Here is another mega roddus sampler for you listening pleasure, but this one is not for the faint of heart or those who like their music clean, mellow or laid back. This dirty monster of a sampler is some my favorite punk sounds from the days of my youf!! I'm 14 years old and I have just seen Stiff Little Fingers on TV late one night and recently heard Bad Brains "Pay To C**" on the radio one night, not to mention discovering "The Sex Pistols" via student radio. This music gets me pumped and I am pogoing around my bedroom, I'm blasting the Exploited's "Punks Not Dead" album on mothers old Thorn Stereo at neighour annoying volume while I am suppose to be studying for exams and I am off the planet with the hardcore sounds of the absolutly brilliant "Tube Disasters" by the brilliantly named Flux Of Pink Indians, not to mention my excited discovery of The Subhumanz and managing to pick up most of their singles on import as well as their fantastic "The Day The Country Died" Album. Me and some mates discover Peter and the Test Tube Babies with their "Pissed and Proud" LP and get thrown off the bus for playing it up loud to annoy every one. Once, an older friend said I would grow out of this music and I certainly did move onto to many other forms of music, but I never grew out of this stuff and it still excites me, maybe not to the level it did when I first discovered it, but most of it still sounds good after all these years and it has been great to track down so much of this music again. This stuff is my musical roots. Enjoy This UP LOUD.

Just like in most other forms of media,the USA has had an enormous global influence in what music we listen to, whether it is to American music itself or local music influenced by American music. I personally originally listened to English music in my early days, but of course that music was directly derived from American music. A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 25 - Mind Blowers

After the mighty Uncut sampler, this latest affair is pretty miniscule by comparison, but contains a group of songs that have really grabbed my attention over the last couple of months. I was recently reading the latest Led Zep bio "When Giants Walked The Earth" by Mick Wall and as I read through, I listened to each of their albums untill I got to "In Through The Out Door", which I have had for years but never really listened to it, as it was considered to be their weakest album. During this listen, I got to rediscover the total brilliance of "All My Love", a song I know well from plenty of radio plays over the years, but with wich I had never really connected with intimately untill now. Another highlight among this diverse and very cool group of songs is the truely great "Bulgaria" by the excellent "It's A Beautiful Day". Not to be missed. Along with a bit of blues, a touch of Jazz, a smidgeon of Prog and plenty of 60s pop, there is plenty here to massage the ears pleasantly. Enjoy Roddus.

A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 24 - UNCUT

Well before, I let Roddus do his thing folks, I just got say that I was just stunned when I opened this just up in my inbox and saw that this SUPER MEGA SAMPLER contains 196 tracks of pure rock. Good on ya' R. for getting this together. I hope it keeps our readers out of mischief for some time. And I hope you get to answer many comments also Roddus. We are not worthy.

For several years I was a regular reader of the British music magazine "Uncut". It was an excellent read with it's featured article each month on the classic rock groups of old, and also articles on newer groups and many reviews of both reissued and new records. They were also big on Americana/Alt Country and they certainly informed my listening habits considerably during that period. But the best thing was the CD you got each month with a mix of new and old music relating to that particular issue it came with. Several other magazines do this as well. I have about 100 of these CD's and this MEGA Sampler is my "Best Of Uncut". Of many of the songs that I have become familiar with and enjoyed over the last 10 years. There are still many songs on those CD's that I haven't become so intimate with, so the exploring continues. I stopped buying it a couple of years ago now as I had to make some financial cuts and this was one of my sacrifices. Enjoy this MEGA Sampler. Roddus.

A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 21 - Slow Blues

The Blues have always been a big influence on Rock N Roll, and over the years I have come to really love the blues, without which there would have been no Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top, just to name a few. Some of my favorite blues have been the slower blues and blues influenced rock tracks and so here is a sampler of some of my faves of this type of song. The Muddy Waters and Stevie Ray tracks are of such outstanding quality that I use them as reference tracks when listening to top end stereo systems at the demo evening I attend occasionally. A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 19 - Disco Duck

I recently went to a friends daughter's 21st birthday party, and the theme was 70's disco dress and so I made this compilation for her to boogie on down to that night. Disco was the in thing when I was about 12 years old and I was just starting to discover music seriously, as I wrote about in an earlier sampler. Disco was the hated music of myself and my peers at the time, and to make matters worse we had two young female teachers who were disco freaks and use to take our class over to the main school hall and try to teach us to disco dance. I was scarred for life. As you all know my earlier music tastes definitely did not extent to this music. 30 years later I have now become familiar with a very small number of Classics of this genre and am not ashamed to admit that I really like these songs now. As you can see not all of these songs come from the original disco era, cos I didn't have enough tracks to fill a CD but the other ones included here, I feel, do fit with what I wanted. Enjoy. A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 20 - Psyched OUT

One of the predominant styles of music I have been coming across on my travels in Blogworld is late 60s/early 70s Psych/Heavy psych. A lot of those early garage bands from the mid 60s either went prog or in a more Black Sabbath influenced heavy direction. Although before Sabbath, the mighty Pretty Things definitely Psyched out in a big way. A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 18 - Afrofunky

Recently I did a small rave on my blog about African funk music, or Afrofunk that I had discovered on Voodoofunk Blog. I have found plenty of this stunning music in the last 12 months and it totally funks my world these days, especially the truly awesome Fela Kuti. A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 17 - Ipod Music

Well Folks, I'm on a roll here trying out some new tricks to get these samplers out with less work and with this one letting My Itunes do the track selection by using random play across the entire 82,000 odd tracks and this time no editing of tracks to get a mix of different styles balanced or what ever, just purely random selection from my library. A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 16 - Random Rock

Howdy there fellow music lovers, it's time again for another Roddus sampler, and after C. hinted to me the other day about posting one I was thinking of the two or three I have already compiled and have been saving for a rainy day, or when I could find some time to finish preparing them. This sampler is NOT one of those, they will come later. This sampler came about the other night as I was sitting in my favorite spot, doing my favorite thing and counting up how many albums I have on my Hard Drive. With all My CDs ripped to my drive as well as all the Music I bought off E.Music a few years ago, and any other stuff I have collected since then, especially including the many rare and obscure albums C. has found, I have approximately 5117 albums, and quite a few stray tracks floating around as well. This all adds up to 82,357 songs loaded into Itunes on my laptop, which is plugged into my stereo, and soon to be connected by a digital analogue converter. So as I was doing my counting, as I said, and was doing my favorite thing, listening to My Itunes Library on random play, a very cool track came on and captured my attention, that I hadn't heard before (there are many of those) and I thought "that would be a good track for a sampler" and so I just started randomly bringing up songs from across the entire 82,357 and after skipping quite a few that, although ok, were not up to being on a Roddus Sampler. Here is the result of that evenings compiling, another eclectic mix from the Roddus hard drive.

I thought I might take a bit more time here to give you all a bit if info about each track. The Alpaca Bros were an NZ band from the late 80s I think, didn't release a hell of a lot of music, but their song "Hey Man", which is on the same EP as "The Lie", is a classic, sort of Lo-fi NZ indie. "Nefesh" is from the first Masda song book, John Zorn's Masterwork, Kletzma Jazz. Mi-Sex were a very sucessful NZ band from the very early 80s and also did well in Australia, their "Space Race" album was the first LP I ever owned. "But You Don't Care" is one of their slower songs, a sort of rock ballad. "Let Her Dance" is a brilliant pop track from the late 60, unmissable. "I'm A lover" was the song that triggered this Sampler, good 70s rock, and one of Chuntao's posts I forgot I had. The next Track is some very good contempory blues from johnny Copeland. The Expendables were another NZ indie band who, I believe, from my home town of Christchurch. Jay Clarkson(the singer) was also originally in the Playthings, who's totally brilliant "Birds Eye View" single I use to own and I would love to get my hand on a version again. "The Man With No Desire" is excellent late night coming down music and totally awesome. "Cotton Eyed Joe" is a bit of hillbilly music for ya. Next up is some very cool Metal from Mastadon, one of the 2000s best metal acts. Bob Marley's "Redemption song is given excellent treatment by Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer, from the Johnny Cash "Unearthed" box set. "The Raft" is off one of my favorite contempoary NZ bands latest albums, NZ reggae/dub/dance music. System of a Down are totally one of the best hard rock/metal bands on the planet bar none. "Carolines Dream" is another dark NZ indie song and another of my early favorite local songs. Murder By Death, mellow alt country, Don't know much about them, but highly recommended. Another top 60s band, Spirit rank up there with Buffalo Springfield and the West Coast POP Art Experimental Band as my favorite bands from this period. "Mr. Skin" is off their "Twelve dreams Of DR. Sardonicus" from 1970. Blind Willie, I think, is the seminal bottle neck blues player of the 1920s/30s. So much emotion in his playing and singing. Ruth Brown was a young pop shouter from the 50s I think. A cool track from Louis, no more need be said. "Bloodlust" is some more metal from a band I know nothing about, a very good track though. "One Over Eight" is some very good Prog Jazz from late period Softs. And finally, "White person" is a humorous live Improvisation from Zappa and Band. I'm running out of time here and need to get this out, so I'll only make mention of a couple of the rest of this sampler in that The Drive By Truckers Track is their best i have heard and Link Wray is just brilliant, the rest are pretty good too. A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 14 - Xmas Cheer

Well Folks, another year has almost slipped us buy and Chuntao suggested A Roddus Xmas Sampler. Now if you think that means soppy crap like; "I SAW MOMMY KISSING SANTA CLAUS" or "SNOOPYS CHRISTMAS" well sorry to disapoint ya. Seeing as I trolled my hard drive for songs with "Xmas or Christmas" in the title, all sorts of weird stuff turned up. Frankly, Christmas dosen't seem to inspire musicians to the peak of their creativity, so it wasn't easy to find enough tracks to reach the giddy heights of previous samplers, still there is a real eclectic mix here as usual, so treat yourself to the alternative to all that Xmas drivel you are likely to hear on the Radio and the even worse piped Xmas slop they feed us at the malls. A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 13 - Download

Well, it's time again for another Roddus Music Sampler. Back in the late 90's when I bought my first computer, the MP3 music file format was pretty new to the world and I embraced it wholeheartedly because there were all these sites where I could get free music legally. Two sites I used regulary were MP3.com, before it was sold and all the music files deleted, and the other was Epitoinc.com. These sites had music posted by the bands themselves to get their music to people who would not normally find it. There are still sites around that do this and on the whole the music ain't that good. But over the years I managed to collect a small archive of offbeat and very cool tracks that I found on these sites. The following Sampler is all the best legal songs I got from these sites , the many hundreds of others I had weren't worth keeping. Some of the stand outs here are the rythmically bizzare "Reverie"(Vas Deferends Organisation), The Awesome "In Metal"(Low), the industrial ambiance of Lustmord and the truly Magnificant post Punk of "Static"(The Standard). Over the Years I have found albums by several of these artists, but the rarest of them all appears to be "Prismatism", an avant guarde Jazz piano group, whom I cannot find a scrap of evidence that they even existed at all, apart from this very cool track here. G'day folks. It seems the music industry has had a fascination with someone named Johnny for well over 50 years, we all know the "Rock N Roll" era was ushered in by Chuck Berry's "Johnny B' Goode" and Johnny has been the subject of many a fine tune since. Of course Chuck wasn't the first to sing about Johnny, plenty of old blues and folk singers had already started that tradition. A Roddus Music Sampler Volume 11 - Guitar Freak Out

I know it's been a while since the last one, but ya all needed plenty of time to rock on out to the last monster Roddus Sampler. Now I have finally found enough time in my busy life to get together another sampler for ya.
