Sassafras - Expecting Company 1973

I give in folks. I gotta let this one go. Not reluctantly, but I have been selfishly enjoying this this cracking Welsh rock band "Sassafras" for ages now. In fact ever since I clocked it on robotsforronnies' wishlist, I knew it was not only rare, but also their best out of their three albums. And I have waited long enough I guess to yield to common sense and share this chestnut with y'all. I was the first to post "Ridin' High" and a fellow blogger agreed to keep the link when they agreed to link to me. They didn't. And I expect the same will happen here too. Oh well. Anyway make sure y'all get this cracker "Expecting Company" here FIRST folks. I know y'all want it. And for those of you who chose to post this or any other FIRST UPS, it would be advantageous to keep the link, so that everyone can enjoy my PREMIUM service, without timers and download limits. I was also thinking of starting to password my files and only those who subscribed would be messaged with the one of many passwords. Let's hope it doesn't have to come to that, eh folks. In the meantime enjoy this anyway folks. These guys are very, very cool by far.

Sassafras is one of those who are completely over looked. It's the 1st time this album is posted (I think).
And that's just great.
Thanks, not only for this one, but also for many other rarities and over looked albums!

Indeed zbin1898,

Unless it gets back dated by some other blogger (which is the easiest thing to do), then yes it is a FIRST UP zbin1898. I mean why else would it be on robotsforronnie for wishlist ever since I started blogging and hasn't been easily found by him. That should tell you.

But I do forward in seeing it being posted after yesterdays date and with the same link. That would be respect.

Enjoy this fine band zbin1898.

cheers for this. Brought back many memories. Sassafras was the first band I saw live at the tender age of 14. Now 50 and listening again to this I had forgotten just how good they were. Again cheers so much

Yes Charlie,

They were very understated. A sleeper methinks. Enjoy my friend and hope it brings you more pleasure than I did sharing it ;]

Thanks for the download - I'm about to give it a listen. The band, after all these years, has a web site and apparently are still active:

My introduction to Sassafras way back when was an import LP - I live in the US - titled "Over the Rainbow", a 1975 collection of live performances by various artists. At the bottom of this web page:

http://calyx.club.fr/cantdisco/O.html

is a description of the record and a picture of its cover. Sassafras did "Wheelin' 'N' Dealin'" and "I Am The Walrus"! This same album also introduced me to Richard and Linda Thompson (and from there to Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, etc.), John Martyn, and Kevin Coyne.

Does anyone have this album for uploading? I've tried Google'ing and searching various music blogs (including Rare MP3's "Various Artists"), but I haven't had any luck. Thanks!

Looking forward to listening to the Sassafras. Thanks for providing some interesting posts, and I'll let you know more of what I think after I've listened to a couple. Your work is much appreciated.

First Anon,

I checked out that Over the Rainbow album and one track from it is virtually impossible to find - I am The Walrus. Other than that the other tracks should be ok to find me feels but if I can't find Walrus cover, there is no point looking for the rest of the single tracks at this time.

Maybe someone has it and might upload for us Anon

Sorry for now.

Really great to hear this album again after so many years. I lived in Wales during the seventies and Sassafras were my fave local band. My cassette version of the album wore out years ago so thanks for posting it, especially as it's still not available on CD unlike the two other Sassafras albums.

Looking through the list of albums I detect a Welsh connection and a distinct liking for '70s pub rock. Tell us more

I had the great experience of working on the same bill as sassafras at queens hall in narberth - West Wales in the 70's - I was the DJ in between the acts - I have fond memories of meeting the band - sharing a drink on side of stage with Terry Bennett and even having a go on Dai Shells Les Paul - Goldtop (Well I was pretty sure it was Dai Shells Les Paul - it was damned heavy too) - I only saw them live once after this (Fishgard) as a member of audience - and had two of the albums Expecting Company and Riding High. I think I still have a Sassafras sticker from that time attached to my decks - stored at my parents house. I am now 50 - and a youngster at the time of this gig - but it was one of the best gigs I attended and there were a few memorable ones in 70's. I have been searching for CD copies of the LP's for some time now - as well as others related to these gigs at queen's hall - Jack Straw (no recordings Swansea band) - Man, Fruupp, Principal Edwards - Even Geordie - played there - of course Brian Johnson went onto better things with AC/DC.
Sassafras were still the highlight of the 70's for me.

Many thanks for the album. My vinyl now totally shot, so this is a life saver. Saw Saaafras a lot in the seventies, they were always constantly touring from memory. Still get the odd email from Terry ( lead singer) in Spain. They were a cracking band live, and I still regualarly play their albums, having committed to digital my other albums some time ago, so I still hear them scratches and all as I originally did! But it was too late for this one. Many thanks again, and I see you have some cracking stuff on here,..great find
