Deaf School - 2nd Honeymoon 1976

"Deaf School" are an avant-garde rock group that hailed from Liverpool in the mid-seventies. They have a very arty, but rather curious style that will grow on you folks. I really got in to a few of their numbers and I hope that you try them and give them a listen. "2nd Honeymoon" is their first of three albums. They were one of the best things to come out of Leever-pool after "The Beatles" that is. This is on request from Thunder.

01. What A Way To End It All (2:56)
02. Where’s The Weekend ? (3:22)
03. Cocktails At 8 (3:24)
04. Bigger Splash (3:30)
05. Knock Knock Knockin' (3:23)
06. 2nd Honeymoon (4:53)
07. Get Set Ready Go (2:44)
08. Nearly Moonlit Night Motel (5:06)
09. Room Service (3:59)
10. Hi Jo Hi (2:21)

another ultra rarity by the looks. apparently this was originally issued as a 22 track double album, but allmusic .com only lists the 12 tracks you have here and I failed to find a track listing of the other tracks. Still looking foward to checking this out.

Looks like the allmusic.com reviewer got confused somehow.

I agree this was the original album.

Roddus,

Perhaps allmusic was including their first two albums as a double album. I'm not sure.

Thunder,

Thanks for clearing that small typo up which R. above mentioned he read on allmusic. Np. Tracl listings can be funny sometimes depending on the label etc.

So I appreciate your input here and enjoying this band.

Thanks for this band who was recomended to me by a member from a forum that i visit sometimes.

By the way this member search another record by this band, "Deaf School - Second Coming, Live reunion album".

Of this disc it is what he writes, "Awesome 10 years after they split up live reunion album by Liverpool's finest (alright, second finest).
Best ever cover of Shake Some Action on this."

This is what another member answers to this request :
"This album did come out on CD (on Demon). It went out of print before I could find a copy, though."

So if anybody have this disc it will be great if he shared it.

Thanks in advance.

'Goodbye cruel world' possibly the best opening line ever for a debur album! Always fetches fond memories rushing back of too much time spend in the 6th form common room smoking players number 6 and drinking warm double diamond from tins while listening to music. It goes without mention that my studies suffered.
Not wishing to be too much of a killjoy, but the bands 3 albums allong with peel sessions have been available on the double CD What A WAy To En It All, the last time I looked the bid A had it for under a fiver.
Nice blog keep up the good work, it often reminds me of the bands that used to crop up on the radio one in concert program, live music..............

Great album! And actually, Roddus is correct. Originally, at least in the U.S., the first two albums ('2nd Honeymoon' and 'Don't Stop The World') were packaged together (Warner Bros. Records - 1977) as a gatefold double LP (and sold for about the price of a single album - Those were the days!) and marketed that way to promote the band. I know, I have the Double LP, and have loved it for years. Unfortunately, the strategy didn't really work and the album never took off in the U.S. (it was shortly to be found in the cut-out bins, which is where I picked-up this then unknown gem). Great to get this in digital form! The second album is worth getting, too, if possible, but 2nd Honeymoon is by far their best album, and actually, a pop Masterpiece. BTW, their 3rd album, 'English Boys/Working Girls' is entirely forgettable and a big dissappointment. By the time that came out (1978, I believe), the group had lost most of its quirky and eclectic charm and had settled into a more straightforward '70's New Wave sound that was pretty dismal. But, for a period in the mid-70's, these guys were the best art-rock pop band ever!

abramson,

Thanks for the xtra info. A very good price you say for those albums. Perhaps some of my readers might make a small investment into this rarity at a cheap price.

Drop by soon

BBkron,

Thanks for clearing that up. I hadn't yet checked this debate out, but had a feeling that their was a double album involved here somewhere.

You are of course correct that their first 2 albums are the best and the third is rather flat but ok. Will be posting second album real soon BBkron.

PS Did you get my proposal I left you recently on comments I left on your blog? It is concerning your wishlist...

Thanks, Chuntao!

Yes, I have been checking out your site in recent weeks and have found many worthy things to download. You do have some unique stuff. I recently added your site to my blog (because it is a good music site, not because I want to get anything out of it). But if you do have any info on or can post anything from my wishlist, that would be great. Congratulations on a great site!

I don't agree in the opinion the 3rd album would be worthless, it is full of tension and charme, Bette Bright sings marvelous on this one.

Someone ought to listen to Deaf School's "English Boys" closer. Remember also when it was released: at the time when Punk & New Wave ruled. The first 2 show the band's class. "English Boys" proved they were relevant AND could keep to their own way of playing.
Deaf School were far more entertaining than any other band around, on this particular circuit. You knew 2 things woukd happen:
(a) You heard MUSIC not noise
(b) You saw a SHOW
Ask Def Leppard's Joe Elliot what he thinks of Deaf School. He was there with a whole bumch of us at Sheffield's Top Rank (aka Improvision). Check out who produced both band's 3rd albums! Synchronicity or Deja Vu?

Clive Langer (a.k.a Cliff Langer on the Deaf school LPs I believe) who wrote most of the material, was very active into at least the late 1970s or early 1980s as a producer and continued to write and record his own material as well. The only moniker I can think of now is "Clive Langer and the Boxes" but there were several. Nothing that I know of that is even remotely similar to Deaf School, but everything I heard was very well done. The only other name that I can remember having popped up anywhere else was that of Paul Pilnick, who played banjo on "2nd Honeymoon" and was also part of "Stealers Wheel" in 1972 or 3 . . .
