I am not worthy! yes it was me that asked for this. and a I apologise for my deep satisfaction. This was the first "World" album I bought and it still gets me every time.

And as for Rock N'Roll... well Gaspar played as a session man in London on all kinds of albums.

Here is a quote from the sleeve :
Gasper-Lawal, African percussionist extraordinary (sic), is the son of Herbalist Asorono-Akejiwori Lawal. Born in Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria, Gasper came to England in the sixties and gigged with numerous African bands before deciding to involve himself with session work, as a means of expanding his musical horizons. He worked with Ginger Baker’s Airforce, Steve Stills, the Rolling Stones, Funkadelic, Joni Haastrup, Sonny Okosun, Barbra Streisand and many other names before joining Clancy in 1975. In 1977 Gasper returned to Nigeria for a while, returning to England to record ‘AJOMASE’ – which means “we all have to do it together”

As a guy who used to read the album credits I seem to remember him working with the Stones as well but cannot remember where or when.

I hope I am not alone in enjoying an album which came out in 1977 - the year of punk! This sat next door to my copy of "Never Mind".. oh happy days

Hi Beb,

Thanks for your request and your appreciation and your lengthy comments. The extra information is also invaluable. I was unaware that he was such a busy guy. There isn't much information on Gasper.

I have tracked down another request on your list (mind it's only a tribute). I hope that's ok. And I will try & post this one also before xmas.

Good luck and thanx for your challenge.

Chuntao,

You have no idea of the smile on my face all yesterday. I bought the vinyl at Sterns on Charing Cross road when World Music was not even a concept the great Charlie Gillett had thought of! Full of West African students from UCL buying and selling records. Much like my first time buying Dub at Daddy Kool records on Brewer St.

A mate of mine thinks and I cannot say more that he was one of the african drummers in the Hyde Park thing for Brian Jones - can one be more rock and roll??

Beb,

Thanx for your aprreciation and for cheering you up in this cold season. You really know your music and by the sounds of it, you have friends in the music game. You also collect records and probably go to lots of concerts also. Cool.

Drop by soon Beb. And thanks again for at least making one person's xmas.

Oh Yeah Man This is good Stuff, Just starting to explore a bit of this African Stuff. Tried to find some info on this guy and found another blog with this album and another he did. Listning to them as i type and grooving.Every blog I find has links to even more blogs with more incredible music so I found a whole slew of african 70s funk compilations to check out as well as the African Pearl Cd comp I brought the other Day of Senegal music. One awesome blog to check out is Voodoo Funk where there is a bunch of afro funk playlists complied from old records the auther of the blog collected while living on the dark continent for the last 3 years.

I listen to many, many forms of music and love most of them.

Holidays Nearly over so my short presence here will be reduced from Monday, but I take away many interesting things on My Ipod to keep me amused at work.

Cheers

Hey Roddus,

Thanks for dropping by again & leaving a very lengthy comment.

I know you are very passionate about your music and glad that you have found some rarites here. Yes it is true that once you open Pandora's Box on Blogspot, there is no stopping oneself ;] I, well everyone knows of chocoreve.blogspot.com, but I don't know of voodoo funk one yet. Will stop by when I have a moment. Thanks for the heads up there.

I did get your other comments but are using them as reference at this time as there are one or two bands you mention (nudge nudge) that haven't been posted yet. I will do my best to locate them for you.

I appreciate your insight and experience & hope to speak to you soon.

C.

PS Don't work too hard my friend.

Beb, your enthusiastic comments are contagious and I'll dl this asap.

Before I started to spend virtually all my time here with Chuntao I was a regular visitor at Benn Loxxo and Captain's Crate. The former is especially good for african explorations. Didn't know about Voodoo Funk, another asap, thanks Roddus.

hey leo,

I found some bloody good african funk compilations from Nigeria on http://sanpasquale.blogspot.com/
among other things including quite a few awesome Fela kuti downloads, My Ipod has been dominated with Kuti music for the last week, absolutly amazing music

Cheers

Roddus,
thanks a lot for that treasure chest! I agree in full about what you say about Fela Kuti. You get a real nice walk (swagger?) when he's in your earphones.

This Gasper album I've only listened to once yet. I like the acoustic qualities towards the end. Made me think of Nyahbinghi music from Jamaica. Soothing.

y'll got me listening now,

How is this Fela fellow ? I am certainly gonna him out also. Tx 4 the heads up and don't mind me.

Leo Rattans said...

C, there's no shortage of Fela info out there, but as an amateur(=lover) I'd say his music makes me think of James Brown, George Clinton, Can, Yusef Lateef. Funky, jazzy, repetitive.
Go where R tipped us to go (sanpasquale) but don't bother dl Confusion/Gentleman. There's a password but HeyCee thinks there isn't.

Leo (I.T.T.)

Roddus said...

Yeah leo, James Brown Definitly, but the african groove and the wall of sax kinda give it its real power.

Fela went to America in the late 60s and I guess that is where he heard James Brown and Jazz etc.. Check out the "69 L.A Sessions"

mmm... Interesting comment about confusion/gentleman, as i downloaded that one but don't remember a password

Any how i think my next shopping spree on amazon will be a Fela Kuti exclusive purchase.

Re: Confusion/Gentleman, maybe there's something wrong with my edition of win.rar. Don't know, don't care. (Chuntao, zip's never given me any trouble, thanks.)It's available from Argentina, and how great it is!
'69 I find a bit tentative, the real power came later.
Anyway, the reissues look really good, the italian posts sure have whetted my appetite.
Finally, I found this customer review very perceptive: http://www.amazon.com/Original-Suffer-Head-I-T-T-Fela/dp/B000FWHVMI

hi leo I read the review u pointed to and i absolutly agree with it.

He's pretty spot-on about Public Enemy too, I think. But that's not what I meant to write...

Listening to the album that these comments s h o u l d be about, pardon us Gasper Lawal. It's very sophisticated, almost too smooth at times, but really good for background music and I d o n o t mean that as an insult. A time and a place for everything.

Also, I went to bennloxo.com (only one x, natch, sorry for previous mis-spelling) and he's been travelling. Now there's music from parts of Europe on it, Iceland, Italy, Romania and Hungary (incl. Omega). Thought you might like to know.

Oh, and thank you for Saturday Morning Pictures!

Joyous weekend, Leo

Roddus"Hi My names Roddus and I'm a musicholic."

Group "Hi Roddus."

Leader"When Was The Last time You listened roddus?"

Roddus" Well first thing this morning I listened to the "Masters Of Reality" Album That came down by torrent overnight, then I listened to "Stray", "Mantis", "Madrigal" and others while mowing the lawn and finally I spent the afternoon reading and relaxing, AND LISTNING to the "Miles from India" Album and "Gasper Lawal."

Leader " Well Roddus We're here to support you, Are you willing to let go of listning to music and taking the 12 steps to musicbriety?"

Roddus" Well, er, um, NO! Fuck it, I love music and I'm Gonna Listen to it from dawn to dusk every day, i'm gonna listen to every peice of music ever recorded, I'm gonna go to my grave with my Ipod on, and when I get to heaven I'm gonna make GOD listen to Fela Kuti and Gasper Lawal and Stray and mantis and Blerta and and....."

But seriously folks, thanks Leo for getting us back on track with Gasper. As i said I listened to both his albums I have along with the Miles From India Album and i think they go very well togeather.

I agree that Gasper makes fabulas Background music, while i was reading, but i also found myself listening intently and being drawn in by the smooth effortless sounding playing that was massaging my ears, the light fusion sounding guitar work and the wonderful african rythems. And I also found myself dancing to it as I was preparing Dinner. Music of many dimensions. I find it very absorbing. I am finding it very difficult to find out about any other music he has released. All music has almost nothing on him except his name and one album listed from 1995, but no review.

Now there is a second album avaliable out there to download, Almost as good as this one and also a good write up about him. These can be found at,

Thanks Roddus, I got it and caked it together with some Fela and, to round the disc off, the Miles Davis Live In Poland from sanpasquale.

It's all in how you approach an album, what you expect. I was probably tuned for something more rootsy. With more listens, it's logical that Beb had this record next to Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols. PiL is not too far away!

Aldo, your blog looks fine. Thanks, C for publishing the address.

Iressog, Leo.

Cymande is another amazing afro-funk band from the 70's, for those of you commenting about Fela. Their material has been reissued through the years, so it shouldn't be too hard to come by.
